Australian Domestic Airline Baggage Guide

(Domestic, February 2026)

Rule of thumb: the cabin “template” is 56 × 36 × 23 cm (including wheels/handles). Depth (23 cm) is what most bags fail on. Always weigh after packing.

International Airline Baggage Guide

From Brisbane (BNE) and frequently from Sydney (SYD) and Melbourne (MEL).

Rule of thumb: if your main bag stays near 55–56 × 35–40 × 20–23 cm and you respect the weight cap, you’ll breeze through most airlines’ sizers.

Notes (what our customers frequently ask us)

  • What does “140 cm linear” mean? Add length + width + height. If it’s ≤140 cm, it meets most domestic checked-bag size rules. (Qantas shows this explicitly; Virgin mirrors it.)

  • Can I pool weight across bags?

  • Qantas uses piece-based allowances domestically (e.g., 1 × 23 kg in Economy). Extra pieces or heavy bags trigger fees.

  • Rex (esp. B737 services) uses a weight-based Economy allowance (23 kg total)—you can spread that across multiple bags so long as no single bag exceeds 32 kg

  • Dash-8 flights (small bins): Qantas/QantasLink restrict to 1 × 23 kg checked; frequent-flyer extras don’t apply.

  • Jetstar tip: it’s cheapest to pre-purchase checked baggage; airport purchases cost more, and anything >1 m attracts an oversize handling fee on top of the weight you buy.

  • Virgin fee gotcha: if your bag lands between 23–32 kg, expect A$65 per overweight piece domestically.
